Quinta da Casaboa, staying true to its positioning—positively unexpected wines—decided to invest in a new experience in order to surprise consumers.
In October 2021, it launched the first Lisbon wine aged in the sea, named Anfíbio.
The project was born from Pedro Pessanha’s passion for the sea and his wife Joana Paes’ passion for the world of wine. Joana leads Quinta da Casaboa, located in Runa, Torres Vedras. It is a family business now in its third generation.
Their shared interests came together, and in 2019 they carried out the first trials with various red blends, at different depths and aging periods. Later, a tasting panel—including the winemaker, the producer, wine enthusiasts, and consumer representatives—selected the blend that showed the most surprising results.
In November 2020, 250 bottles were submerged, and in the summer of 2021 they were retrieved from the seabed, where they had remained for 8 months at a depth of 10 meters along the Atlantic coast.
It is a limited edition from the 2017 vintage, composed of the Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Alicante Bouschet grape varieties. Before reaching the sea, it aged for 4 months in barrels on land.
The bottle design was entirely shaped by nature, and the glass bears the marks of the sea’s effect, making each bottle unique.
