On June 20 and 21, 2025, the first event dedicated to wines produced in Portugal and aged in the sea took place in Sines.

It was organized by the Regional Tourism Authority of Alentejo and Ribatejo and the Municipality of Sines, with conception and production by APENO – the Portuguese Wine Tourism Association, and supported by the Alentejo Regional Tourism Promotion Agency. The main goal was to open a debate on wine aging at sea and highlight the key characteristics resulting from this method.

One of the highlights of the event was the guided tasting of underwater-aged wines, led by sommelier Rodolfo Tristão and APENO president Maria João de Almeida, which allowed for a comparison between wines aged at sea and on land.

The event also featured academic participation, represented by Maria João Cabrita and Cristina Barrocas Dias.

“Wine is a living being, constantly evolving. Temperature, light, and the depth at which the wine is submerged are key factors capable of triggering natural changes, whether in colour, astringency, or in the wine’s own ageing process,” argues chemistry lecturer Cristina Barrocas Dias.

Quinta da Casaboa was present at this pioneering event with its wine Anfíbio, the first wine from Lisbon aged at sea.
